My Approach
Curious
My goal is to learn what motivates the customer, collaborate to identify what’s working, problem-solve opportunities for improvement, conduct user research to verify assumptions, and iterate to make sure we hit all the right notes.
Inclusive
I consider the whole picture, from a wide view to the smallest details. I believe accessibility and inclusivity are foundations of good design, not afterthoughts. Clear communication, active listening, and deep empathy are key skills I bring into my design work.
Direct
I take a direct approach in my work and communication. I’m not one for buzzwords or jargon (I don’t think I’ve ever used “synergy” unironically). I ask for details and provide information to reduce confusion and ensure ease of use. Design done well doesn’t attract attention — it just works, so you and your customers can, too.
Nothing like a career change to inspire self-reflection!
As I’ve reflected, I’ve realized my educational background and work experience have all centered around collaborating with and supporting people in one way or another. In my various roles, I have honed strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and a deep sense of empathy, curiosity, and patience. Working with people from all walks of life has instilled a deep appreciation and drive to learn more about different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences than my own. As it turns out, this is what design is all about!
Work experience, along with a degree in Human Development, has fed my desire to learn about people’s motivations, frustrations, and how best to support their needs and goals. My Master’s degree in Global Studies, combined with my professional background, have helped me to look at the bigger picture and recognize that decisions or changes in one area almost always affect other areas as well. Careful attention to detail helps me anticipate problems, address them in planning stages, and adapt as needed to fine-tune successful solutions. I find it fascinating how often and in how many ways my previous professional experience provides a benefit in my design process!
In my personal time you might find me planning my next trip, exploring the beautiful Colorado mountains, having fun with photography, reading, or trying a new recipe. I love to travel and I’m always interested to learn about new places, experiences, and people. If you have an idea in mind, get in touch and let’s discuss!
